Radio City
Release date: Feb 01 1974

Radio City, Big Star’s sophomore effort, is a shimmering beacon of power-pop perfection, blending jangly guitars, bittersweet lyrics, and infectious melodies. Released in 1974, it was created during a turbulent time for the band, with founding member Chris Bell absent from the lineup. Despite the chaos, Alex Chilton and the remaining members delivered an album of remarkable clarity and heart.

“September Gurls” is the album’s crown jewel, a transcendent ode to fleeting love that influenced countless bands from R.E.M. to the Bangles. “O My Soul” opens the record with raw energy and funk-infused guitar licks, while “Back of a Car” captures the longing and wistfulness of youth. Tracks like “Daisy Glaze” and “Life Is White” balance Chilton’s soulful voice with sharp, innovative instrumentation.

Though it received critical acclaim upon release, Radio City struggled commercially, as distribution issues hampered its reach. Over time, however, the album’s brilliance has been recognized, becoming a touchstone for alternative and indie rock. Its lo-fi charm and emotional resonance have cemented Big Star as cult legends, with Radio City standing as a testament to their enduring influence.
