Selena Quintanilla, known simply as Selena, was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas. Dubbed the “Queen of Tejano Music,” Selena was a cultural icon whose influence extended far beyond her musical career. Selena’s musical journey began at a young age when her father, Abraham Quintanilla, formed the family band Selena y Los Dinos. Her early performances at family gatherings and local events showcased her natural talent and charisma. By her teenage years, Selena had become a rising star in the Tejano music scene, a genre traditionally dominated by male artists. Her breakthrough came with the release of her 1992 album Entre a Mi Mundo, which included the hit single “Como La Flor.” The album catapulted her to fame, earning her a devoted fanbase and critical acclaim. Selena’s follow-up album, Amor Prohibido (1994), solidified her status as a superstar, with hits like “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and the title track becoming anthems of Latin music. In addition to her musical success, Selena was a fashion icon, launching her own clothing line and designing many of her stage outfits. Tragically, Selena’s life was cut short when she was murdered on March 31, 1995, by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. Despite her untimely death, Selena’s music and legacy have endured, with posthumous releases like Dreaming of You (1995) introducing her to an even broader audience.
